about

Jiraiya was a band that was a long time in the making. Schuyler Clayton and Andrew Franklin first began playing music together when they were 16. Over the course of roughly a decade, the two musicians learned to play countless covers, wrote hours of original material, played dozens of shows and learned how to record using whatever means were available, famously utilizing an old-school karaoke machine for their earliest cassette demos. But their ultimate goal from the earliest jam session was to make a full length album of original material that had no genre boundaries. Thus, Jiraiya was finally born when the duo reunited in the spring of 2008 after taking time off from their previous endeavor, Before Dishonor. Schuyler and Andrew spent most of the summer writing material for the album they had been planning for years, Old Eyes Made New. Schuyler wrote the core of the album using a digital 8 track recorder as a pre-production demo. Andrew then took these songs and brought them to life in the very original form of his drumming. To help get the project on the map, they enlisted a versatile bassist and all around great musician named Eric Swann. Eric took some of the bass lines Schuyler had initially written in pre-production and added his own original feel, ultimately enhancing the songs and solidifying many of Jiraiya's most memorable grooves. Then followed Nathan Hawkins, who was initially brought in as a rhythm guitarist to help beef up the overall sound, but after bringing his own material to the table, he became much more of an asset to the group than as a secondary player. Nathan helped restructure some of the songs that were written before the band went into the studio and co-wrote many of the tracks on the album. 2 of his songs actually ended up being on Old Eyes Made New. After recording the instrumentals, Jiraiya came into contact with a formally trained, highly adept vocalist from Asheville, NC named Myers Gilmer via his previous project, Lecivius. Myers recorded vocals for a few of the tracks on Old Eyes Made New, and later went on to be the voice for Telic. Jiraiya went on hiatus as of 2010 due to many reasons, but check out Messenger, a new band featuring several members of Jiraiya. www.facebook.com/wearemessenger.
